Oakland Unified School District Set to Slash Electricity Costs By Nearly Half

Oakland Unified School District is planning to significantly reduce their electricity costs by nearly half. For that’s with the installation of a SunPower solar energy system at 16 schools. This system is also set to reduce the district’s annual electricity costs by approximately $1.7 million. All for the next two decades.

The installation of the SunPower solar energy system at the Oakland Unified School District will provide a number of benefits to the district. The solar energy system is able to generate up to 11.3 megawatts of clean electricity, making it the largest solar energy system installed on a school district in the United States. In addition to this, the system is expected to help reduce the district’s greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 8,000 metric tons per year.

Financial Benefits

The installation of the SunPower solar energy system is expected to help the Oakland Unified School District save up to $1.7 million on energy costs over the next two decades. This is estimated to be equivalent to a 44% reduction in their current electricity costs. In addition, the district will also benefit from a number of tax credits and incentives, which are expected to help offset up to 75% of the cost of the solar energy system.

Environmental Impact

The installation of the SunPower solar energy system at the Oakland Unified School District is also expected to have a positive impact on the environment. The solar energy system is set to reduce the district’s greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 8,000 metric tons per year. This is equivalent to taking 1,700 cars off the road.

The Los Angeles City Council approved moving forward with the Los Angeles Green Business Certification Program. The City of Los Angeles’ initiative, to be administered by the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), will provide information on how to identify a green business and how businesses can adopt sustainable practices. One of the aims is to enable consumers to support firms that strive to protect the environment. The program was announced at a news conference at Ciudad restaurant. Green Seal, Inc., the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, Green Globe and dineLA, a part of LA INC, The Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau will join the LACCD in its work on this effort.
Joe Veilleux doesn’t view himself as an environmentalist, but he understands how his actions might paint him with that brush. “I’m not an environmentalist,” said Veilleux, general manager of the U.S. operations of natural health ingredient manufacturer Euromed. “I’m a pragmatist. There’s a difference. A lot of environmentalists have characterized their cause as one that pits them directly against corporate America. I’m part of corporate America, but I also recognize the debt I owe to the environment and want to do my fair share to protect it. In the long run, it’s just good for business and there are plenty of examples throughout history of how our environment is one of our most valuable natural resources.” Veilleux’s company is partner with the Everglades Foundation in a campaign dubbed Glade-iator (www.glade-iator.org), which is a model of the public-private partnership Veilleux believes is good for business.
