SodaStream Unearths Plastic for Earth Day Network & Scarlett Johansson to Raise Awareness about Harmful Plastic Waste and Promote a Bottle-Free Plane

SodaStream unearths plastic from the oceans. It’s therefore reaffirming its commitment to reducing the volume of plastic bottles in the landfills or oceans. So they create cans that won’t end up in landfills each year. SodaStream is the world leader in home beverage carbonation stations, is leading a campaign to raise awareness for the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. As part of the campaign, SodaStream unearths plastic continent in order to highlight the scale of pollution. In fact, SodaStream unearths plastic continent to strengthen its environmental advocacy and inspire action. This is a collection of waste floating in the ocean that is twice the size of Texas. To combat this environmental catastrophe and urge people everywhere to join its bottle-free movement, SodaStream has partnered with Earth Day Network and 5 Gyres. As a result, they aim to further expose what they call ‘The Secret Continent’.

The Secret Continent

‘The Secret Continent’ is an imaginary resort destination. SodaStream created it to highlight the environmental devastation in the Pacific. The damage to our planet shocks many. Humans produce 1 billion plastic bottles every day. This garbage patch comes from just a fraction of the 10 million tons of plastic pollution released each year. So far, scientists have documented the effects of marine plastic pollution on 663 different marine species. This list includes all known species of sea turtles, half of marine mammals, and one-fifth of seabird species. By using this whimsical approach, SodaStream aims to make the environmental message resonate worldwide. Similarly, SodaStream unearths plastic continent as a way to communicate the urgent need to address plastic pollution.

‘The Secret Continent’ represents a massive floating garbage island; in fact, it is larger than many countries. Furthermore, SodaStream seeks recognition of this island as the world’s eighth continent. To that end, they challenge the global population to sign an online petition, which will go directly to world leaders. This petition, therefore, urges them to acknowledge ‘The Secret Continent’ publicly. Additionally, it calls for proactive measures to change how we use and discard plastic. Consequently, by doing so, we will highlight plastic pollution; thus, this issue will no longer be ignored. SodaStream unearths plastic continent to prompt legislative action and policy change.

SodaStream’s Continent

‘The Secret Continent’ is part of SodaStream’s ongoing mission to help consumers reduce their carbon footprint and prevent continued environmental damage in landfills. One SodaStream can save the average U.S. family up to 2,000 bottles and cans each year. Notably, SodaStream unearths plastic continent as a powerful visual reminder of the dangers of plastic waste.

“We applaud the bold steps SodaStream takes to bring the Pacific Garbage Patch to the forefront. Consequently, they proactively fight to reduce the amount of plastic that gathers in landfills each year,” said Kathleen Rogers, President of Earth Day Network. “We all know that plastic debris doesn’t biodegrade. However, we often overlook where it actually ends up. Furthermore, we underestimate the danger all this plastic imposes on birds, animals, plants, micro-organisms, and seawater. Therefore, the Secret Continent Campaign stands strong. It isn’t just a publicity stunt; rather, it serves as a serious effort to advocate for the health of our oceans and the survival of our planet. Thus, we are thrilled to join SodaStream on this mission.”

Scarlett Johansson

SodaStream’s Global Brand Ambassador, Scarlett Johansson, has already signed the petition and is a huge supporter of this cause. “I am honored to be a part of a project that is powered by such noble intentions and goals. The Secret Continent inspires people to change the way they live. Products like SodaStream aid in the reduction of our carbon footprint, a feat that is vital to preserving the planet for our children.”

“SodaStream is steadfast in our mission to elevate awareness for reducing the amount of plastic waste,” said Daniel Birnbaum, CEO of SodaStream. “The Secret Continent is a disruptive way to make people stop and rethink how they drink, from what they’re putting into their bodies to how they’re safeguarding the planet.”
