BAODING, China, Jan. 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Yingli Green Energy Holding Company Limited (NYSE: YGE) (“Yingli Green Energy” or the “Company”), one of the world’s leading solar panel manufacturers, known as “Yingli Solar,” today announced that its holding subsidiary, Yingli Energy (Beijing) Co., Ltd. (“Yingli Beijing”), has begun the construction of a 20 megawatt (MW) solar power plant. The plant is located in Shule County, Xinjiang Province, China.
This example of a 20-megawatt solar power plant built by Yingli Green Energy, one of the world’s largest photovoltaic manufacturers at the time. The project demonstrated how utility-scale solar installations were rapidly becoming a core part of China’s national clean-energy strategy.
A Major Solar Installation Supporting China’s Renewable Goals
The 20-MW facility was designed to supply significant clean electricity to the regional power grid. Utility-scale solar plants like this help reduce reliance on coal-fired generation while supporting long-term energy security.
At the time of construction, China had already emerged as the world’s largest solar manufacturing hub. Companies such as Yingli were expanding beyond simply producing solar panels. Instead, they were developing complete solar power plants, integrating manufacturing, project development, and grid deployment.
Projects like this one helped accelerate China’s renewable energy rollout. According to the International Energy Agency, large-scale solar deployments in China were growing at record speed during this period. These installations also supported global declines in photovoltaic costs.
How Utility-Scale Solar Plants Work
Large solar farms typically install thousands of photovoltaic panels across wide land areas. These panels convert sunlight into direct current electricity. Inverters then transform that electricity into alternating current that can feed directly into the grid.
A 20-MW solar project can generate enough electricity to power thousands of homes annually, depending on solar conditions and grid efficiency. In addition to clean energy production, solar farms offer several environmental benefits:
First, they produce electricity with zero direct emissions.
Second, they require minimal water compared to fossil-fuel power plants.
Third, they support distributed power generation that strengthens grid resilience.
Solar Manufacturing and Global Market Expansion
Yingli Green Energy’s project highlighted how Chinese solar companies were expanding globally. During this period, Chinese manufacturers dominated photovoltaic panel production and drove down costs worldwide.
Organizations such as the National Renewable Energy Laboratory documented how rapid manufacturing scale helped reduce the price of solar modules dramatically between 2010 and 2015. As costs declined, solar power became competitive with conventional electricity sources in many markets.
This transformation reshaped the global energy landscape. Solar installations expanded across Europe, North America, and Asia, setting the stage for today’s widespread renewable energy adoption.
Why Large Solar Projects Matter
Utility-scale solar projects like the Yingli installation serve several important roles in the transition to cleaner energy:
- Solar will reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.
- They diversify national energy supplies.
- They stimulate green-technology manufacturing and job growth.
For sustainability advocates like Seth Leitman — The Green Living Guy®, projects like these represent the type of infrastructure needed to support widespread electrification. As electric vehicles, battery storage, and smart grids continue expanding, large renewable energy facilities provide the clean electricity required to power that future.
Upon its completion in the second quarter of 2015, the project will, in fact, generate approximately 28 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually. This, therefore, showcases a significant advancement in renewable energy initiatives within the region. Notably, this amount is enough to meet nearly 30 percent of Shule County’s residential power demand. Moreover, this is especially crucial as the county continues to grow and develop. One notable aspect, in particular, is the involvement of Green Energy from Yingli, which, consequently, contributes reliable output for sustainable solutions. Furthermore, the reliable output of this energy will not only contribute to the local economy by providing sustainable energy solutions but will also play a vital role in promoting environmental sustainability. As a result, residents will, ultimately, enjoy reduced energy costs while benefiting from a cleaner energy source. This, in turn, will lead to a healthier community.
The Bigger Picture for Solar Growth
China’s early investment in solar infrastructure helped accelerate a global energy shift. What began with projects like Yingli’s 20-MW installation eventually contributed to gigawatt-scale deployments across the world.
Today, solar energy is among the fastest-growing electricity sources globally. Continued innovation in panel efficiency, battery storage, and grid integration will only increase its role in the clean-energy transition.
Yingli Green Energy Environmental Impact
It will offset about 17,000 tons of carbon emissions each year. This is equivalent to planting over 21 million trees. Therefore, it will ultimately contribute to a healthier environment and significantly mitigate the impact of climate change. This remarkable achievement not only highlights the effectiveness of innovative carbon reduction strategies but also underscores the importance of collective efforts toward sustainability. By adopting such measures, we can ensure a greener future for generations to come. This will foster biodiversity and improve air quality on a global scale. In fact, environmental progress in the region is strongly driven by Yingli Green Energy’s commitment to clean energy initiatives.

It is an honor to bring solar power to Shule County for the very first time; furthermore, we applaud the local government’s efforts to encourage renewable energy project development. Consequently, we aim to expand our operations and accelerate the growth of the clean energy economy throughout Xinjiang Province, where we have already developed over 100 MW of solar projects,” commented Mr. Liansheng Miao, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Yingli Green Energy.
