A dedication ceremony was held today in Westport, Conn., to celebrate the 7-kilowatt (kW) solar photovoltaic (PV) system installed on the roof of Staples High School. The solar PV system, which the Town earned through the Connecticut Clean Energy Communities Program of the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF), was installed by Ross Solar Group.
Westport’s Green Task Force, co-chaired by Alan Abramson and David Mann, and the Green Club at Staples High School have been driving forces in boosting clean energy awareness and CTCleanEnergyOptionsSM signups, helping Westport earn the 7-kW solar array at the school. The Green Task Force, which advises the town on environmental policy and decisions that will help transform Westport into a sustainable green community, has promoted CTCleanEnergyOptions signups at a number of local events. The group also successfully persuaded the town Planning and Zoning Department to modify its building-height regulations so that roof-mounted solar installations would be excluded from building height measurements, thus making it easier for residents and businesses to install solar arrays. Additionally, students in the Green Club have been highly successful in securing CTCleanEnergyOptions signups through a range of activities including door-to-door canvassing and promotions at annual Eco Fest and Earth Day events.

May 31, 2011: San Francisco, CA and Voi, Kenya – Wildlife Works, announced today that its pioneering Kasigau Corridor REDD Project, Phase II – The Community Ranches, was successfully validated and verified under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standard (CCB) and is the world’s first VCS REDD mega-project, in that it will result in the avoidance of over 1 million tonnes of CO2-e emissions per year for the next 30 years.
Wildlife Works’ ground-breaking REDD initiative now protects over 500,000 acres of Kenyan forest, securing the entire wildlife migration corridor between Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks, and bringing the benefits of direct carbon financing to more than 100,000 people in the surrounding communities.

LONDON, ENGLAND — May 10, 2011 – South Lanarkshire Council is using device power management software from Verismic Software to save £40,000 per annum in energy costs relating to its 4,500 desktop and laptop PCs in use at multiple sites across the region.
Successfully in use for one year following a gradual, staged deployment, the software delivered Return On Investment (ROI) to the Authority in less than 12 months.
The software also generates monthly savings reports, which can be shared with the Authority’s Head of IT, management and ‘green team’ for further review.
The energy savings contribute to the Authority’s Carbon Management Plan, which includes aims to help the Council cut its carbon emissions, reduce its environmental impact and improve its reputation within the community.
