South Lanarkshire Saves Energy with Smart Software

South Lanarkshire Council Saves £40,000 Each Year by Cutting Energy Waste

South Lanarkshire Council in Scotland has found a smart way to save money and energy. By using special software to manage power on office computers, the council now saves about £40,000 each year.

The council looks after services for more than 300,000 people. To lower energy use, it worked with a company called 1E. Together, they added software to 7,000 desktop computers. The software is called NightWatchman®.

How the Software Works to Save South Lanarkshire Energy

NightWatchman® helps computers shut down when no one is using them. It turns off computers at night, on weekends, and during holidays. Before, many computers were left on by mistake. Now, they use much less electricity.

This small change made a big impact. Not only did it cut power bills, but it also helped the environment.

An infographic with simple icons and large text shows how South Lanarkshire Council saves £40,000 each year through smart power management. It highlights energy savings, carbon emission reductions, and software automation using 1E’s NightWatchman® tool.
South Lanarkshire Council’s smart energy management program saves £40,000 annually while cutting 200 tonnes of carbon emissions—thanks to automated software that powers down unused office computers.

Better for the Planet

By using less energy, the council also reduced carbon emissions. In fact, they avoided about 200 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. That’s like taking several cars off the road.

But the environmental impact goes even further. Less electricity use means less demand on power stations, many of which still burn fossil fuels. By lowering demand, the council helps reduce air pollution and water use at these plants too. Cleaner air supports public health, especially for children and older people.

The program also shows how digital tools can support green goals. When more councils follow this lead, the combined effect can make a huge difference. Saving energy one computer at a time might seem small—but when thousands of machines work more efficiently, the savings add up fast.

This kind of action supports Scotland’s net-zero carbon goals and shows how climate action can also be cost-effective.

A Model for Others

South Lanarkshire is showing other cities what’s possible. With tight budgets and growing climate concerns, this project proves that simple tech upgrades can make a real difference.

This work supports Scotland’s national climate goals too. The Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009 calls for big cuts in pollution. This project is a smart step in the right direction.
