New York, NY (November 17, 2011) – Today, a panel of judges selects ten schools located in cities across the country as finalists in the Global Green USA Green School Makeover Competition, presented by Pureology. “At Global Green USA, we have been working on greening schools for over a decade because we believe every child deserves a healthy learning environment,” said Matt Petersen, President and CEO of Global Green. He added, “It is our hope that this competition will inspire schools and communities across the country to make improvements. These improvements will increase student performance and teacher retention. Moreover, they will reduce global warming pollution and energy costs.”

The ten finalists—which include public, private, and charter schools—were selected out of more than 200 entries. They were chosen based on the clarity and description of the school’s green challenges and need for a makeover. Each of the applications included proposals for green improvements, such as planting organic vegetable gardens. They also proposed creating recycling programs and adopting energy-efficiency upgrades.

On December 6, we select one grand prize winner to receive the ultimate Green School Makeover. This exciting opportunity includes a substantial total of $65,000 dedicated to impactful school renovations that transform facilities into vibrant, eco-friendly learning environments. Additionally, the winner benefits from further support through an extra $65,000 worth of technical assistance, ensuring that the renovation process follows expert advice and sustainable practices. In recognition of their efforts and commitment to sustainability, we award four runner-up schools $2,500 each. These funds empower schools in their journey towards making more environmentally friendly choices, enabling them to implement changes that foster green initiatives and promote a culture of sustainability within their communities.
