Poland Embraces Fracking to Reduce Gas Dependence

There is perhaps no more controversial energy source after nuclear than “hydraulic fracturing,” or “fracking,” of subterranean shale deposits containing pockets of natural gas.
While the process can liberate previously unusable sources of natural gas, political, environmental and scientific concerns have risen along with production, as evidence mounts that fracking is responsible for everything from polluting subterranean aquifers to causing regional earthquakes.
But no matter – during his 24 January State of the Union address, U.S. President Barack Obama wholeheartedly embraced hydraulic fracturing without even mentioning it, telling his audience, “We have a supply of natural gas that can last America nearly 100 years. And my administration will take every possible action to safely develop this energy.”

ZICKLIN Sustainability School: Gamifying Green Initiatives

NEW YORK, NY – At its core, gamification is about motivating action by having fun. New research from Ogilvy Earth suggests games can be a powerful way to create brand engagement while driving green behaviors.
As part of Social Media Week at Baruch College, the Robert Zicklin Center for Corporate Integrity is hosting a panel discussion titled, “Green Gamification: Using Game Mechanics to Promote Sustainability,” from 4 to 6 p.m., February 15, in the Newman Conference Center, room 750. Registration is now open.
Innovative companies are “gamifying” their marketing campaigns to fulfill human desires for rewards such as status, goods, achievement and reciprocity. The discussion will focus on game-based marketing techniques to reward green actions by using mobile Apps, website tools and social media.
The event, which is part of Social Media Week at Baruch College, is co-sponsored by Bennu, a green social marketing company that was started in 2010 by a diverse group of social entrepreneurs who met while pursuing their MBA’s at Baruch.

Installation Sustainability Agreement Signed

The Department of Defense (DoD) announced Dorothy Robyn, deputy under secretary of defense for installations and environment, and Paul Anastas, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) assistant administrator, signed an agreement that formalizes the partnership between the Defense Department and EPA to develop and implement technologies that will help create sustainable American military bases all over the world.
Under this memorandum of understanding (MOU), DoD and the EPA’s Office of Research and Development will collaborate in the development of innovative technologies to help create sustainable and resilient military bases across the country and overseas. The cutting-edge research of EPA and DoD scientists and engineers will be used to develop and demonstrate tools and technologies that will aid DoD in achieving its vision of sustainability.

Energy-sucking microwave ovens

Ever wonder how much energy is wasted by that blinking light or clock on your microwave?
Turns out, a lot more than you might think.
As NRDC energy efficiency advocate Meg Waltner notes in her new blog, microwaves – along with other household electronics that have standby features – are energy “vampires” that cost the typical American household about $100 a year.
But new standards proposed by the Department of Energy, could save consumers — between $1.8 billion and $3.6 billion on our power bills over 30 years – by cutting the stand-by power used by microwaves.
