EPA Green Power Partners: Top 50 Organizations

EPA Names Top 50 Green Power Leaders in the U.S.

Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) just released its latest list of the Top 50 Green Power Partners—a nationwide ranking of the leading buyers and users of clean, renewable electricity. These organizations lead by example. They reduce their carbon footprints and invest in America’s green energy economy.

Together, the Top 50 use more than 15 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually. That’s enough to power more than 1.3 million average American homes for a year. Even better, this clean electricity comes from sources like wind, solar, geothermal, biomass, and low-impact hydropower.

Who’s Leading the Charge?

Intel Corporation tops the list, continuing its streak as the largest voluntary purchaser of green power in the U.S. The tech giant uses over 2.5 billion kWh annually—enough to power nearly a quarter-million homes. Kohl’s Department Stores, Microsoft, and Whole Foods Market also rank near the top, showing that both corporate and retail sectors can make serious renewable energy commitments.

Why It Matters

Green Power Partners don’t just buy renewable energy—they help grow the market. Many of these companies purchase Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) or generate power on-site through solar and wind systems. As a result, they support domestic clean energy jobs while cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson praised the efforts. “We applaud these companies for stepping up,” she said. “They’re proving that using green power is smart business and a smart investment in America’s future.”

The EPA Green Power Partnership

The Green Power Partnership is a voluntary program. It encourages organizations to use green power as a way to reduce the environmental impact of electricity use. More than 1,300 partners participate, including Fortune 500 companies, small businesses, colleges, and local governments.

To qualify, organizations must meet minimum usage levels based on their total electricity consumption. Many go above and beyond—some generate power on-site or invest in innovative green power technologies.

Conclusion: Green Power Is Growing

The EPA’s Top 50 list sends a clear message—green power isn’t just for environmentalists. It’s for corporations, schools, and communities that want cleaner air, energy security, and long-term savings. As more organizations join the movement, the U.S. clean energy transition keeps accelerating—one kilowatt at a time.
