ChargePoint and Eaton Help Transition Santa Monica’s Electric Bus Fleet

ChargePoint and Eaton are working with the City of Santa Monica on their transition of its bus fleet. Yet today, it is taking another major step toward cleaner public transportation.

The city is working with ChargePoint and Eaton to build the charging and electrical infrastructure needed for its growing electric bus fleet. The project supports Santa Monica’s goal of transitioning its Big Blue Bus fleet to zero-emission vehicles by 2032. (Metro⁠)

130 DC Fast-Charging Ports Planned

At the center of the project are 130 DC fast-charging ports.

ChargePoint will provide its Express Plus charging equipment. In addition, the company will supply software designed to manage charging operations and monitor electric buses both at the depot and while they operate on routes. (Metro⁠)

That software matters.

Electric buses cannot simply pull into a depot and charge whenever they want. Instead, operators need to coordinate charging with route schedules, electricity demand and available charging capacity.

Therefore, fleet-management software can determine when buses charge and how much power they receive.

As a result, transit agencies can keep buses moving while also controlling energy demand.

Eaton Builds the Electrical Backbone

Meanwhile, Eaton will provide much of the electrical infrastructure behind the chargers.

Managing Electric Bus Charging

ChargePoint’s fleet software will also help Santa Monica monitor its buses and charging infrastructure.

Diesel buses can refuel quickly from centralized fuel pumps. Electric buses operate differently. They may remain connected to chargers for extended periods, while dozens of other buses also need electricity.

Therefore, charging infrastructure becomes part of the transit system itself.

Reliable chargers become as important as reliable buses.
