Toyota’s Upgraded TMG EV P002 Returns to Conquer Pikes Peak
Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) returned to the legendary Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in 2013 with an upgraded version of its electric race car—the TMG EV P002. This sleek electric beast aimed to shatter its own previous record with new technology, increased power, and high-altitude performance upgrades.
TMG EV P002: Building on a Record-Breaking Legacy
In 2012, the original TMG EV P002 stunned the motorsport world by dominating the electric vehicle (EV) category. Powered by twin electric motors delivering a combined output of over 350 kW (469 hp) and a top speed of 240 km/h (149 mph), it proved that EVs could go head-to-head with combustion engines—even on one of the most punishing tracks in the world.
But Toyota wasn’t satisfied with just winning. The 2013 version returned stronger and smarter.

Performance Upgrades for 2013
To tackle the 12.42-mile (20 km) course with 156 corners and a finish line at 14,115 feet (4,302 m) above sea level, TMG engineers boosted the P002’s aerodynamics, motor performance, and battery management system. The result was even more torque, improved thermal regulation, and better energy efficiency throughout the climb.
TMG partnered once again with Toyota Racing Development USA (TRD USA) to provide local technical support, leveraging their knowledge of high-altitude vehicle calibration.
Proving EVs Can Dominate Motorsports
Toyota’s return to Pikes Peak wasn’t just about breaking records—it was about proving the long-term potential of electric racing technology. With instant torque, zero emissions, and now enhanced endurance capabilities, EVs like the TMG EV P002 showcased the future of high-performance motorsports.
Looking Forward
As automakers compete in electrified racing circuits worldwide, Toyota’s TMG division remains at the cutting edge. Events like Pikes Peak serve as open labs, where technologies tested on the mountain eventually make their way into consumer EVs.
