Business Lessons from Nature: Earth Island’s Innovative Course
Earth Island Course goes Business Model Strategies from Ecology and Evolution
In May 2013, the Earth Institute at Columbia University introduced a groundbreaking course titled “Business Models: Strategies from Ecology and Evolution.” This course offered a fresh perspective on business strategy by drawing parallels between natural systems and corporate operations.
Bridging Biology and Business
The course emphasized the shared vocabulary between ecology, evolution, and business—terms like competition, resources, and ecosystems. By understanding how natural systems operate, businesses can gain insights into creating sustainable and adaptive strategies. For instance, just as species evolve to survive in changing environments, companies must adapt to market shifts to remain competitive.

Course Structure and Content
Held on Wednesdays (May 1 and 8) from 6:10 to 8:10 PM and Saturday (May 4) from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, the course was accessible both in-person and online. It was part of the Earth Institute’s Certificate Program in Conservation and Environmental Sustainability, which allowed participants to take individual courses or pursue a full 12-course certificate.
The curriculum delved into concepts like “business ecosystems” and the “adaptive imperative,” exploring how companies can learn from ecological and evolutionary principles to address sustainability challenges. Topics included:
- Adaptive Strategies: Understanding how businesses can evolve in response to environmental and market changes.
- Resource Management: Learning from ecosystems about efficient resource utilization.
- Competitive Dynamics: Analyzing how competition in nature can inform business rivalries.
Expert Instruction
The course was led by David Meyers, a professional with a unique blend of expertise in both biological sciences and business. Holding a Ph.D. in Biological Anthropology and Anatomy from Duke University and an MBA from Yale School of Management, Meyers brought a multidisciplinary approach to the classroom. His experience as a serial entrepreneur and consultant in sustainability and environmental finance enriched the course content. Notably, he founded Madagascar Bamboo, Africa’s first industrial bamboo transformation company, showcasing his commitment to sustainable business practices.
Broader Educational Offerings
Beyond this course, the Earth Institute offered a range of classes aimed at integrating environmental understanding with practical applications. Upcoming courses included:
- Disease Ecology: Exploring the relationship between ecological systems and disease spread.
- Forest Management and Conservation: Hands-on learning at Black Rock Forest.
- Introduction to Environmental Policy: Understanding the frameworks governing environmental decisions.
These courses aimed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to address pressing environmental issues through informed decision-making and strategic planning.
Embracing Nature-Inspired Business Models
The Earth Island course highlighted the value of looking to nature for business inspiration. By studying ecological and evolutionary systems, businesses can develop models that are resilient, efficient, and sustainable. This approach encourages companies to think beyond traditional strategies, fostering innovation that aligns with environmental stewardship.
For those interested in exploring the intersection of ecology and business further, the Earth Institute’s Certificate Program offers a comprehensive pathway. Whether you’re a business professional seeking sustainable strategies or an environmentalist looking to understand corporate dynamics, this program provides valuable insights.
