Major Victory for South Australian Wind Farm as Court Upholds Approval

A major renewable energy project in South Australia has cleared a critical legal hurdle. The state’s Supreme Court has upheld government approval for the $700 million Stony Gap Wind Farm near Hallett in the Mid North region, dismissing an appeal that sought to block its development.

The 119-turbine wind farm, backed by Trustpower (now Tilt Renewables), will generate hundreds of megawatts of clean energy. Developers say it will power tens of thousands of homes while creating construction jobs and long-term maintenance roles in the region.

Environmental groups and clean energy advocates have hailed the ruling as an important victory for Australia’s renewable energy transition. The decision affirms that large-scale wind power projects can meet regulatory requirements and deliver much-needed investment to rural communities.

Legal Challenge Rejected

The court case arose after a local landowner appealed South Australia’s Development Assessment Commission (DAC) approval of the project. The challenge focused on alleged noise impacts and planning process issues.

However, Justice Malcolm Blue ruled that the DAC had properly assessed the project against planning guidelines and environmental criteria. He found no grounds to overturn the approval, allowing construction and investment plans to move forward.

“This is a sensible, evidence-based decision,” said a spokesperson for Trustpower at the time. “It clears the way for us to deliver a world-class renewable energy project that will bring major benefits to the region.”

Clean Energy Benefits for South Australia

South Australia is a national leader in wind energy, with renewables already supplying over 40% of the state’s electricity at the time. Projects like Stony Gap support the state’s ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cut reliance on fossil fuels.

The Stony Gap Wind Farm is expected to:

  1. Generate significant renewable electricity to support the grid
  2. Reduce carbon emissions equivalent to taking thousands of cars off the road annually
  3. Create hundreds of construction jobs and ongoing maintenance employment
  4. Support local businesses and boost regional economies

Advocates say these projects are essential to meeting Australia’s climate goals while delivering stable, low-cost power.

Supporting Australia’s Renewable Future

The court’s ruling signals confidence in South Australia’s planning and environmental assessment processes. It also demonstrates that renewable energy projects can meet community standards when carefully planned and assessed.

As Australia works to decarbonize its power sector, large-scale wind and solar farms will play a vital role in delivering reliable, sustainable, and affordable energy for all Australians.
