Statement of Madeline Page, Campaign Coordinator, Public Citizen
March 23, 2018
Note: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Scott Pruitt is expected as soon as next week to reverse the agency’s previous conclusion that America’s clean car standards are working and achievable. This comes at the behest of automakers and without any change in the facts, ignoring the thousands of pages of research and analysis that support keeping the standards.
Though we have yet to see the draft decision that is reported to have been sent to the White House’s Office of Management and Budget, if Scott Pruitt’s track record of reckless deregulation is any indicator, we have reason to be deeply concerned.
Pruitt and President Donald Trump have met with automakers repeatedly since arriving in office. Ford and other automakers have attacked the standards at every turn – most recently using their trade association to publish regulatory comments to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that cast doubt on commonly accepted climate science and the link between air pollution and adverse health impacts.
Pruitt is pandering to auto executives at the expense of Americans. Any move by this administration to weaken or undo the clean car standards – a move that will cost American families thousands at the pump and allow automakers to make dirtier cars that pollute our air and harm our health – is unacceptable.
