China Clean Energy Fund: Transforming Apple’s Supply Chain

Apple launches new clean energy fund in China – Apple

Apple is investing in over 485 megawatts of clean energy projects across six provinces in China. All to address upstream emissions in our supply chain.

Apple Launches $300 Million Clean Energy Fund in China

Cupertino, CA — Apple reached a breakthrough global climate leadership with the launch of a new $300 million clean energy fund in China. The China Clean Energy Fund will drive the development of renewable energy projects to power Apple’s supply chain and support China’s broader environmental goals.

Partnering for Impact

Apple isn’t doing this alone. The company has joined forces with 10 of its suppliers operating in China. Together, they aim to invest in and develop over 1 gigawatt of clean energy by 2022. That’s enough electricity to power nearly 1 million homes. Powered by 100 percent clean energy.

Suppliers involved include major manufacturing partners like Pegatron and Wistron. All participants have committed to reducing their carbon footprint and increasing renewable energy use in their production processes.

Supporting Apple’s Carbon-Free Vision

This fund supports Apple’s larger goal: powering its global supply chain entirely with clean energy. While all of Apple’s offices, stores, and data centers already run on 100% renewable power, the supply chain accounts for the bulk of its total carbon footprint. That’s why this fund focuses on clean power at the source—where Apple’s products are made.

“We are proud to launch the China Clean Energy Fund to help accelerate the transition to renewables across our supply chain,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s Vice President of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives. “We’re committed to doing our part to combat climate change and to partner with others to make a broader impact.”

How the Fund Works

The China Clean Energy Fund will be managed by DWS Group, a global asset manager with expertise in sustainable investments. By pooling money from Apple and its suppliers, the fund gives smaller companies access to renewable projects they couldn’t finance on their own. The goal is to make clean energy adoption more efficient, affordable, and scalable.

This collaborative model allows Apple’s suppliers—many of which are small and mid-sized manufacturers—to invest in wind and solar farms without bearing the full financial burden.

A Broader Push for Sustainability

This isn’t Apple’s first clean energy initiative in China. In 2015, Apple began building its own solar projects in the region. Since then, it has expanded its work to include dozens of supplier commitments to clean power. Apple’s efforts align with China’s own clean energy targets, which aim to reduce fossil fuel reliance and increase renewable capacity nationwide.

According to Apple, the fund is expected to reduce millions of metric tons of CO₂ annually once fully operational.

A Model for Global Corporations

As one of the world’s most influential tech companies, Apple’s actions set a precedent. The China Clean Energy Fund proves that environmental leadership can—and should—start with supply chains. It also offers a blueprint for how businesses can work together to fight climate change.
