So let’s say holy #FixALeak campaign.

Because the average American household has leaks that waste more than 10,000 gallons of water each year.

In addition, those little drips add up. Thereby contributing to more than 1 trillion gallons of water wasted each year across the United States.

So to combat water waste, the EPA’s #FixALeak Week campaign is aimed at helping people become leak detectives. Many leaks at home are silent but can easily be found and fixed when you know what to do.

Through the WaterSense program, the EPA is giving consumers the clues they need to save water. That even means the money saving on water bills in their homes. So I thought you’d be interested in joining us this year.

Here are all the ways you can get involved:

  1. Share these important clues to help people detect and fix leaks #FixALeak

Check your utility bill

During the winter, if a family of four is using more than 12,000 gallons of water per month, it could be the clue to a leak.

3. Read your water meter

Check your water meter. It’s often near the curb in front of your home or in the basement. Especially during a period when no water is being used. If the reading is not exactly the same after two or three hours, you could have a leak. So #FixALeak!

Take a 10-minute toilet test.

Put a few drops of food coloring into the tank at the back of your toilet and let it sit for 10 minutes. If color shows up in the bowl, you have a leak. Make sure to flush after to avoid staining, and consider replacing your old toilet flapper if it is torn or worn.

Outdoor #FixALeak options

People can take these steps at any time of year for the #FixALeak campaign. I did this week so watch out for my tweet. Finally, so please feel free to check out these tips and more at http://www.epa.gov/watersense/fixaleak
