Sobeys Grocer Paves Way with Plastic
For Sobeys has led by paving a new store parking lot with the equivalent of more than 6 million recycled single-use plastic bags. Thereby promoting plastic reduction and reuse.
Sobeys Post-Consumer Plastics
STELLARTON, NS, /CNW/ – First of all, Sobeys Inc. opened a brand-new store in Timberlea, Nova Scotia. So the grand opening kicked off, welcoming customers and the local community. All to a celebration that included the unveiling of one of first parking lots paved using post-consumer plastics. Consequently all of it was diverted from local landfills. The amount of recycled plastics used in the mixture is the equivalent of more than 6 million plastic checkout bags.
So this innovative approach to plastics reduction and reuse follows the Company’s industry-leading commitment to remove plastic grocery bags from all their grocery stores by the end of January 2020. It’s a change that will take 225 million plastic grocery bags out of circulation. That’s only at Sobeys’ 255 locations across Canada each year.
Sobeys Plastics Diverted from Landfills
Over the past four months, Sobeys Inc. and Crombie REIT, developer and property manager for the Sobeys Timberlea site are planning. They have worked directly with local small business Goodwood Plastic Products. It’s a business based in Colchester County and committed to finding smart solutions for recycling plastic materials. Even to also research and develop the new asphalt pavement mixture.
Sobeys Diverting Plastics with Wood
So Sobeys Inc. also worked with Goodwood Plastic Products. They also provided the recycled plastics lumber used for Sobeys Inc.’s Ultimate Picnic Table. For that was unveiled on the waterfront late last month.
Most recently it has also diverted 60,000 single-use plastic bags from local landfills. The new Sobeys Timberlea store also has a new picnic bench made from Goodwood Plastic Product’s recycled plastics. That’s in addition to the lumber onsite for customers to enjoy.
Sobeys Driving Sustainability Locally
