Nebraska Cuts Climate Science. Farmers, Weather Pros, and the Planet Pay the Price

Ugh, Nebraska cuts climate science. Because Picture this: You’re a Nebraska farmer watching storm clouds gather on the horizon. Your corn crop hangs in the balance. Meanwhile, the state just axed its only program training the very people who could help you understand what’s coming.

That’s exactly what happened on December 5, 2025, when the University of Nebraska Board of Regents voted to eliminate the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at UNL. In one fell swoop, they killed the state’s only academic program producing meteorologists, geologists, and climate researchers.

The reason? Saving \$1.85 million from a \$21 million budget shortfall. It sounds reasonable until you realize what Nebraska just sacrificed on the altar of short-term savings.

What Nebraska Just Lost

The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences wasn’t just another academic program gathering dust. This was Nebraska’s climate intelligence hub. Seventeen faculty members conducted research that kept farmers informed, communities safe, and the state’s natural resources monitored.

Gone are the programs that trained homegrown weather experts who understood Nebraska’s unique climate patterns. Lost is the local expertise in groundwater systems that farmers depend on for irrigation. Eliminated are the research projects studying carbon sequestration beneath Nebraska soil and regional climate modeling for agriculture.

Most importantly, Nebraska no longer produces its own meteorologists and geologists. In a state sitting smack in the middle of Tornado Alley, that’s not just short-sighted: it’s dangerous.

Professor Adam Houston put it bluntly: “The work that we’re doing is training these students to go out and save lives.” These weren’t ivory tower academics. They were training the next generation of National Weather Service forecasters and climate researchers.

Farmers Face the Music

Nebraska’s agricultural economy drives the state. Farming generates billions in revenue and employs thousands. Yet the state just eliminated the very department that helped farmers navigate increasingly unpredictable weather.

Eric Hunt, assistant extension educator of agricultural meteorology, didn’t mince words about the impact. “Outside of cutting agronomy, animal science or plant pathology, I don’t think you could have another department at the university that was more important to agriculture, because that’s your groundwater, that’s your weather.”

Think about what farmers need to succeed. They need accurate weather forecasts to time planting and harvesting. In addition, they also need groundwater monitoring to plan irrigation. Finally, they need climate data. Essentially to choose crop varieties and adapt to changing conditions.

The department provided all of this. Now, farmers are left wondering where they’ll turn for the local expertise they’ve relied on for decades.

One farming leader captured the frustration perfectly: “The weather’s so unpredictable, we need as many resources around as possible.” Instead of adding resources, Nebraska subtracted the most important ones.

Moreover, extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and severe. Droughts, floods, and severe storms can wipe out entire harvests. Local climate expertise helps farmers prepare for and respond to these challenges. Without it, they’re flying blind into an uncertain future.

Weather Warnings Go Unheeded

Nebraska sits in one of the most weather-active regions in the United States. Tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, blizzards, and extreme temperature swings are all part of life in the Great Plains. You’d think a state in this position would prioritize weather expertise.

Instead, Nebraska chose to eliminate it entirely.

The consequences extend far beyond the university campus. Nine professors from the University of Wisconsin-Madison wrote a support letter highlighting the obvious: “Particularly for a state in the center of ‘Tornado Alley,’ there is a need for trained meteorologists and climatologists, which contribute to Nebraska residents’ safety.”

Local weather knowledge saves lives. When severe weather threatens, residents depend on forecasters who understand regional patterns, local geography, and historical weather data. Generic forecasts from distant experts simply don’t provide the same level of precision and reliability.

Furthermore, the National Weather Service relies on locally trained meteorologists who understand their regions intimately. These professionals know how storms develop over the Great Plains, how local topography affects weather patterns, and what signs to watch for when severe weather approaches.

By eliminating this program, Nebraska ensures future weather professionals will come from other states. They’ll lack the deep understanding of Nebraska’s unique climate challenges. That knowledge gap could prove deadly when split-second forecast decisions determine whether communities receive adequate warning.

The False Economy of Climate Cuts

Here’s where the budget logic falls apart completely. Nebraska saved $1.85 million by cutting climate science. But what will it cost to replace this expertise when it’s desperately needed?

State Climatologist Deborah Bathke spelled out the economic reality. Planned research using regional climate modeling with crop modeling may not happen. “We would have to contract that out to someone who does not have the local expertise of Nebraska. Anytime you contract something out, it’s more expensive than if you do it in house.”

Let’s do the math. Contracting out climate research will cost more than the \$1.85 million saved. Add the economic losses from less accurate weather forecasting. Factor in the agricultural damage from reduced climate adaptation capacity. Include the costs of recruiting weather professionals from other states who lack local knowledge.

Suddenly, that budget savings looks like an expensive mistake.

Meanwhile, climate impacts are accelerating. Extreme weather events cause billions in damages annually. Effective climate adaptation requires local expertise and long-term research. Nebraska just eliminated both to save money equivalent to building a few miles of rural highway.

The opportunity costs extend beyond immediate needs. Climate research attracts federal funding, graduate students, and collaboration opportunities. These departments typically generate more research dollars than they cost to operate. Nebraska traded this economic activity for short-term budget relief.

A National Warning Sign

Nebraska’s decision reflects a broader national problem. Climate science is under attack just when we need it most. Budget pressures provide convenient excuses to eliminate programs that seem abstract or academic.

But climate science isn’t abstract for farmers watching their crops wither in drought. It’s not academic for communities facing unprecedented flooding. It’s not theoretical for families in the path of increasingly powerful storms.

Other states are watching Nebraska’s experiment with interest. If eliminating climate programs produces no immediate consequences, similar cuts could spread. This represents a fundamental failure to understand climate science’s value. Unlike other academic disciplines, climate science provides essential infrastructure for economic and public safety. Eliminating it is like cutting funding for weather radar or earthquake monitoring systems.

The timing makes the decision even more troubling. Climate impacts are intensifying across the Great Plains. Agricultural systems face unprecedented stress from changing precipitation patterns, extreme temperatures, and shifting growing seasons. Farmers need more climate support, not less.

Nebraska’s farmers and communities will eventually pay the price for this penny-wise, pound-foolish decision. Unfortunately, the bill may not come due until the next major drought, flood, or severe weather outbreak tests the state’s reduced climate capacity.

The question is whether other states will learn from Nebraska’s mistake or repeat it themselves. For the sake of farmers, communities, and climate preparedness nationwide, let’s hope they choose wisdom over false economy.
