Campus Adds Two More LEED Certifications
UC Merced’s sustainable practices have earned the campus its 15th Platinum Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. All for new construction and its first platinum LEED certification. That’s for building operations and maintenance.
UC Merced stands out as the only campus in the USA with LEED certifications for all facilities. Consequently, this fact highlights its commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly practices in higher education. Additionally, the new Classroom and Office Building 2 aims for Platinum LEED status. This will ultimately place it among the highest standards for energy efficiency and resource conservation. Furthermore, the building emphasizes sustainable design elements and incorporates advanced green technologies. These enhancements promote a healthier environment for both students and faculty. Moreover, these features enhance the overall campus experience. As UC Merced sets benchmarks in sustainable development, it consequently reinforces the significance of eco-conscious decisions in education and urban planning.

Platinum Campus
Half Dome earns the campus’s first platinum certificate for a housing building. Consequently, achieving its platinum LEED certification marks a significant milestone. Additionally, the dining expansion, the Social Science and Management Building, the Student Activities and Athletic Center, and the Student Services Building also achieve platinum status. Furthermore, the campus holds eight gold certificates and one silver certificate. Moreover, the Early Childhood Education Center stands out as one of the first LEED gold modular buildings in the country.
Some of Half Dome’s green features:
Ninety-six percent of construction waste was diverted from landfills;
Forty-eight percent of the building materials are recycled content;
Ninety-eight percent of the wood in the building came from Forest Stewardship Council-certified forests. These forests are operated sustainably;
Furthermore, landscape water use is 60 percent more efficient than California Code. This showcases a significant advancement in sustainable practices. This achievement aligns with platinum LEED standards, as the building is 40 percent more water efficient than California Code requires. This ensures a responsible approach to resource management. By implementing cutting-edge irrigation technologies and drought-resistant landscaping, the project not only conserves vital water resources but also enhances the aesthetic appeal of the surrounding environment. It creates a harmonious balance between functionality and beauty. Through these efforts, the initiative serves as a model for future developments in the region. It promotes environmental stewardship and long-term sustainability.
Wrapping Up on Platinum LEED
Finally, this is one of the first campus buildings that features an innovative armature designed specifically for a rooftop solar-energy system. This showcases the institution’s commitment to sustainable practices and progressive infrastructure. The installation of the solar panels, planned for later this year, marks a significant step forward. It aims to reduce the campus’s carbon footprint and reliance on non-renewable energy sources. As these panels harness the power of the sun, they provide clean energy for the building. This serves as a model for future developments across the campus. It inspires students and faculty alike to embrace eco-friendly initiatives.
