The Role of Nature4Climate in Tackling Climate Change

Introduction

Statement from Lucy Almond, Director of Nature4Climate, regarding the new WWF Living Planet report.

The work to tackle climate change isn’t working at cross-purposes. All with the need to feed a growing world population. Natural climate solutions are urgently required to provide a third of the world’s climate solutions by 2030. It can work in harmony with sectors like agriculture and forestry. Take reforestation of degraded and unused land.

Talk about a wake-up call! This image hits you right between the eyes with the harsh reality of our planet's wildlife crisis. On the left, we're treated to a slice of paradise. It's a vibrant, pulsating ecosystem bursting with life. Majestic elephants roam freely, tigers prowl through lush undergrowth, and a kaleidoscope of birds paint the sky with their colorful plumage. It's nature in all its glory, the way it should be. But then your gaze drifts to the right, and it's like someone hit a giant "delete" button on the natural world. The once-verdant landscape has been reduced to a barren wasteland. Trees lie fallen, the soil cracked and lifeless. The few animals that remain look lost and out of place, struggling to survive in this desolate scene. Slapped across the center of this stark contrast is a glaring "59%" in bold red. It's not just a number; it's a scream for help. This represents the staggering 59% average decline in global wildlife populations between 1970 and 2018, as reported by WWF's Living Planet Report. It's a figure that should stop us all in our tracks. But wait, there's a glimmer of hope at the bottom of the image. Silhouettes of people working together, planting trees, and protecting animals remind us that we're not powerless in this fight. It's a visual representation of the conservation efforts championed by organizations like UNDP and the Nature4Climate coalition. This image doesn't pull any punches. It lays bare the devastating impact we've had on our planet's ecosystems. But it also serves as a powerful motivator. The contrast between the two sides shows us what we stand to lose if we don't act now - and what we might still save if we do. It's a visual representation of the urgent message from WWF, UNDP, and Nature4Climate: our planet's wildlife is in crisis, but there's still time to turn things around if we act now. This isn't just about saving cute animals; it's about preserving the delicate balance of our entire ecosystem. So, what's it going to be, folks? Are we going to let that 59% grow even larger, or are we going to roll up our sleeves and fight to bring some of that vibrancy back to the right side of the image? The choice is ours, and the time to act is now.

Reforestation vs Deforestation

This can effectively remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere without disturbing prime agricultural land. So regenerative agriculture cares with practices that reduce emissions and store more carbon in soils. It therefore will even boost the amount of food we produce. Finally and all while helping the climate at the same time.

A Call to Action: Preserving Our Living Planet

The WWF Living Planet Report paints a stark picture of our world’s biodiversity crisis. With a 59% decline in global wildlife populations since 1970, we’re facing an unprecedented challenge. But this isn’t just about numbers – it’s about the very fabric of life on Earth.

The UNDP and Nature4Climate coalition remind us that hope isn’t lost. Their response to the report emphasizes the critical role of nature-based solutions in combating both climate change and biodiversity loss. These solutions aren’t just pipe dreams – they’re practical, implementable strategies that can make a real difference.

Crossroads

As we stand at this crossroads, the choice is clear. We must act now to protect and restore our planet’s ecosystems. This isn’t just an environmental issue – it’s an economic one, a social one, and ultimately, a question of our own survival.

Each of us has a part to play in this global effort. Whether it’s supporting conservation initiatives, making sustainable lifestyle choices, or advocating for policy changes, every action counts. The time for half-measures has passed. We need bold, decisive action to turn the tide.

Remember, when we protect nature, we protect ourselves. The health of our planet’s ecosystems is inextricably linked to our own well-being. By investing in nature, we’re investing in our future.

Let’s heed this wake-up call. Let’s work together to create a world where humans and nature thrive in harmony. The challenge is enormous, but so is our capacity for change. Our living planet is counting on us.

Finally, Nature4Climate (N4C) is an initiative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). As well as the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Conservation International (CI), The Nature Conservancy (TNC), Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), Woods Hole Research Center, World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and World Resources Institute (WRI). All of them aim to increase investment and action on natural climate solutions in support of the 2015 Paris climate agreement. The N4C partners work together to catalyse partnerships between governments, civil society, business and investors to cut and remove greenhouse gas emissions across the land sector.
