Mazda CX-50 Hybrid Premium Plus: Test Drive Results

Mazda CX-50 Hybrid Drive Premium Plus 2025

Hey there, green driving enthusiasts here’s the Mazda hybrid-drive premium! I’ve been itching to share my recent test drive experience with the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid Drive Premium Plus 2025, and let me tell you. Yet it’s quite the package for anyone looking to blend style with efficiency!

The Powertrain: Toyota Hybrid Tech Meets Mazda Design

The CX-50 Hybrid Premium Plus uses Toyota-sourced hybrid technology (the same system found in the RAV4 Hybrid) that pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with three electric motors. That’s two in the front and one in the rear to provide all-wheel drive. Together, they produce 219 horsepower, with the gas engine alone delivering 163 pound-feet of torque.

What’s really impressive is the fuel economy. The EPA rates this beauty at 39 mpg city and 37 mpg highway for a combined 38 mpg.

During my week of testing, I was pleasantly surprised to see real-world numbers hovering around 37.7 mpg across varied driving conditions – that’s pretty close to the estimates! One owner reported getting over 37 mpg with their hybrid, which further confirms these aren’t just fantasy numbers.

Driving Dynamics: Mazda’s Soul with a Hybrid Twist

Now, I’ll be honest with you – if you’re expecting the same zippy performance as the turbo CX-50, you might be a bit disappointed. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) that comes with the hybrid system does take some of the traditional Mazda sportiness away.

There’s a bit of engine drone at lower speeds, and the extra weight of the hybrid system (it weighs in at 4,008 pounds, about 100 pounds heavier than the turbo version) is noticeable. So when driving West toward Binghamton I knew something was off!

That said, the CX-50 Hybrid still handles beautifully compared to most competitors. The chassis and suspension tuning remain pure Mazda – with precise steering that offers good feedback, a slightly firm ride, and well-controlled body motions in corners. The ride is smooth on highways but maintains that signature Mazda nimbleness that makes winding roads enjoyable.

Interior & Features

The Premium Plus trim really shines inside! You get a sophisticated cabin with high-quality materials that honestly feel a class above its price point. The seats are comfortable with just the right amount of bolstering to keep you in place without feeling restrictive.

Standard features on the Premium Plus trim include:

  • Ventilated front seats
  • Power-adjustable passenger seat
  • 12-speaker Bose audio system
  • 10.25-inch infotainment display
  • Panoramic moonroof
  • Unique black-metal interior trim

The Premium Plus also comes with an impressive array of safety tech, including blind spot intervention, front cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree parking camera with a See-Through View function.

The Bottom Line

The 2025 CX-50 Hybrid Premium Plus (priced at around $41,470) makes a solid case for itself as the most practical version in the lineup. While it doesn’t have the thrilling acceleration of the turbo model, the significant boost in fuel economy, coupled with Mazda’s excellent handling characteristics and premium interior, creates a compelling package.

Is it the most exciting drive in the hybrid crossover segment? Maybe not. But it’s definitely one of the most stylish and well-rounded options out there, offering that perfect blend of efficiency and driving pleasure that’s hard to find in this class.

If you’re looking for a small SUV that can help reduce your carbon footprint while still putting a smile on your face when the road gets twisty, the CX-50 Hybrid Premium Plus deserves a spot on your test drive list!
