Breaking Records: China’s Explosive Renewable Energy Growth

It’s 2025, and China is rewriting the global playbook on clean energy. Within just the first four months of the year, wind and solar power alone accounted for a jaw-dropping 89% of all new generation capacity. That’s not a typo—almost nine out of ten new watts in China today come from the wind or the sun.

Solar power deserves a special shout-out. Installations have shot upward with a 75% year-over-year growth rate. By April 2025, China’s total installed electricity capacity stood at a massive 3,487 gigawatts—a 16% jump from 2024. Solar capacity is up 48%, while wind follows with a respectable 18% boost. Thermal power? Inching ahead by a mere 4%. That difference speaks volumes.

Just in the first quarter, China added 72 GW of new solar. That’s more than what most countries install in a decade, and it’s 18% higher than the previous year’s record pace.

The April numbers are wild: wind and solar generated 26% of all electricity in China. That’s most notably the highest monthly share ever recorded. Only a month earlier, they hit 23.7%, showing the pace of this surge.

China’s new zero-emissions energy sources exceeded the growth in electricity demand. When power demand rose by 3.8%, all new demand was satisfied with clean energy. Specifically, solar energy increased by 42.9% to reach 350 TWh. In addition, wind energy grew also by 16% for a total of 412 TWh.

Here’s a milestone worth repeating: China’s carbon emissions peaked in March 2024. Since then, they have been falling. In early 2024, coal-fired thermal generation dropped by more than 5%. What does the road ahead look like? China’s last planned coal plant will come online in 2028. After that, coal is expected to drop from the current 55% of generation to just 20% by 2040. The massive addition of renewables is the driving force behind this shift.
