Real World Concerns About Electric Vehicle Battery Chargers and Charging Stations Explained

Yes I have said this thing about electric chargers and in my stories a lot.  Sorry!  Lately I was reading my book Build Your Own Electric Vehicle 2nd Edition and thought this passage was an interesting read for you all.   That’s all.  Enjoy..

Wait, let me explain here that the Bottom line on this post and this excerpt talks about electric current and chargers.  These are the concerns you’ll have with electric vehicle charging stations or chargers.

You can plug chargers up to 20 amps into your standard household 120-volt AC outlet.  Higher capacity electric chargers require a dedicated 240-volt AC Circuit-the kind that drives your household electric range or clothes dryer.

Also, three phase power is found in industry and the power grid, not in the home.  Homes are usually single-phase.  Very high-voltage power lines have six wires plus a lightning ground at the top.

AC electric vehicles usually use three-phase motors where the voltage and frequency must be chargers as driving conditions vary.

So, whether you have an on-board inverter, controller and electric vehicle battery charger for minimum parts county and maximum efficiency (current flow decides the circuit function automatically-YEAH!!).

Off-Board Electric Vehicle Charger

An Off-board electric vehicle charger gives you high power capability. It turns that power into quicker charging times in permanent charging stations. Those which are essentially incorporate many additional features.  These are like the ones you have seen commercials from GE.  There are others out there but charging stations are so the way to go.  Much cheaper too..  Talk about a tax cut and national security cut to the reduction of fossil fuels.

Why the Right Electric Vehicle Charger Still Matters

Electric vehicle chargers have changed dramatically since we first wrote Build Your Own Electric Vehicle. However, the basic electrical principles still matter. Voltage, amperage, available power and battery capacity continue to determine how quickly an EV can charge.

Home Electric Vehicles Chargers Starts With the Electrical System

First, EV owners need to understand the electrical service feeding the charger. A standard household outlet provides limited charging power. Therefore, it works best when a driver travels fewer miles each day or has plenty of time to recharge.

However, a dedicated 240-volt circuit changes the equation. It can deliver considerably more power to the vehicle. As a result, drivers can recover many more miles of range while the car sits overnight.

Moreover, the electric vehicle charger cannot simply demand unlimited electricity. The electrical panel, circuit breaker, wiring and charging equipment must work together. Therefore, a qualified electrician should evaluate the home’s available electrical capacity before installing higher-powered equipment.

The Electric Vehicle Also Controls Charger Speed

Meanwhile, the charging station represents only one part of the system. The vehicle determines how much AC charging power it can actually accept.

For example, installing a more powerful charging station does not automatically make every EV charge faster. Instead, the vehicle’s onboard charging equipment sets its own limit. Therefore, matching the EV to the charging equipment becomes important.

Additionally, battery temperature and state of charge can affect charging performance. Modern electric vehicles actively manage these conditions. Consequently, today’s charging systems have become far more sophisticated than the basic equipment found on early EV conversions.

Smart Electric Vehicle Chargers Creates Another Opportunity

Furthermore, connected electric vehicle charger equipment can help drivers control when their vehicles draw electricity. Drivers can schedule charging for overnight hours. In some markets, they can also take advantage of lower off-peak electricity rates.

That matters for the electric grid too. Instead of every EV demanding electricity at the same time, smart charging can shift some demand to periods when the grid has more available capacity.

Moreover, homes with solar power create another opportunity. Drivers can potentially charge their electric vehicles with electricity produced right on their property. Add battery storage, and the EV can become part of a much larger home energy strategy.

Electric Vehicle Charging Became Infrastructure

Most importantly, electric vehicle charging is no longer an experiment. It has become part of America’s transportation and energy infrastructure.

Yet the fundamentals haven’t disappeared. We still need the right voltage, sufficient current and the need to properly size wiring and electrical equipment. Finally, we need electric vehicle charging equipment that matches both the vehicle and also the electrical system.

That’s why understanding EV charging matters just as much today as it did when we wrote Build Your Own Electric Vehicle. The technology keeps improving. However, good electrical engineering remains the foundation that makes it all work.
